Peaks and Valleys

-Spencer Johnson, M.D.

I found this book from @dr.benjaminhardy YouTube channel, where he posts many recommendations on how to improve your life by improving yourself. His review for Peaks and Valleys can be seen here, which is the video I found which lead me to read this book.

This was a very short book, which took a little over an hour to read and write notes from. The format of story telling was reminiscent of Acers of Diamonds, which you can listen to for free on the Master Key Society‘s YouTube channel. This is another channel in which I subscribe to and would highly recommend.

This quote sticks out the most to me from this book: “All things happens for you, not to you. There are no mistakes in life, only lessons.”

Below are some of my notes and quotes from this read:

  • Preface – The essence of knowledge is, having it, to use it – Confucius
  • p15 – It changed how I looked at the ups and downs in my life. And thanks to that, I changed what I did!
  • p19 – How you feel depends largely on how you view your situation.
  • p21 – Peaks and Valleys are connected. The errors you make in Todays good times create Tomorrows bad times. And the wise things you do in Todays bad times, creates Tomorrow good times.
  • p24 – Peaks are moments when you appericate what you have. Valleys are when you long for what is missing.
  • p51 – The most common reason you leave a peak too soon is arrogance masquerading as confidence. The most common reason you stay in a valley too long is fear, masquerading as comfort.
  • p75 – …both good and bad times in my life are truly gifts, and that each has great value, if you mange them well.
  • p82 – Ask questions and assume you don’t know the answer.

There are many great examples and analogies which I found beneficial to help frame the ups and downs of life. Everything is a pattern, cause and effect and this book helps to identify some of the tells in this game of life. I hope you take the time to read this book and that you find this helpful.
